...was held at Leeds Elementary September 19th and included motivational concerts, forestry,
horticulture and ag stations.
Thanks to a grant from the
US Forest Service and support from our Green Industry partners, 365 3rd-5th graders received a hardbacked, George Washington
Carver biography to help in their science education.
On Saturday, 5,000 attendees
from all over the area had lots of fun in the Children's Area, climbed on tractors, played games and learned about Alabama
Ag Products.
The area was held in conjunction with the Leeds Folk Festival and John Henry
Days, which will become an annual event. Join us next year!
In
January the AGITC met with the Middle School Science Club to demonstrate container tree planting, begin a vegetable garden
and help grow trees for their new school.
February 16th the AGITC, AUFA, ACES, Leeds Tree Commission, Advanced Mower and Landscape Workshop help plant 12 very
nice specimen oaks, maples and crapemyrtles on the Leeds Elementary campus. The trees are beautiful and will be maintained
over the years by our partners.
February 23rd 15 classes
of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders learned about bareroot and container tree planting, tree care and the
need for physical fitness. Our US Forest Service sponsors conducted three stations and helped inspire the children to
care for the environment and value our urban forests. Staff from "Wellness And You" or WAY brought pedometers, and
each of the 365 plus children learned how many steps they could walk in 10 minutes.
Thanks again to Representative Owen Drake, Cawaco RC&D, US Forest Service and all our corporate sponsors
and donors for this great project!
